Job description

About Us

Let’s create a more sociable future together

At Endeavour, we’re totally into what we do. With a portfolio that includes Dan Murphy’s, BWS, ALH Hotels, Pinnacle Drinks and more, we love to bring people together. Together we share our passion for our products and industry; it’s what inspires us to dream big, and continue to create new experiences for our customers and teams across Australia. If you thrive on positive energy, we want to meet you!

About the Role

  • Bring your passion and feel the energy
  • Hybrid ways of working
  • Corporate Benefits

Are you a passionate and skilled engineer ready to shape the future of observability? Endeavour Group, Australia’s largest retail drinks network and a leading hotel portfolio, is seeking an Observability Engineer to be a driving force in our Corporate Technology team in Sydney.

In this pivotal role, you'll be at the forefront of our observability strategy, leading the expansion and deep integration of Dynatrace across our diverse organization. You'll transform raw telemetry data into actionable, business-centric insights, empowering our development, operations, and product teams. This is a unique opportunity to build our observability practice on a greenfield foundation, defining standards, automating critical processes, and championing a culture of proactive, data-driven problem-solving.

Sound good? Read on.

Here is a taster of what you can expect in this role:

Observability Adoption

  • Drive Dynatrace Adoption: Lead the expansion of the Dynatrace platform across new business units and applications through collaboration with development teams and application owners to ascertain business objectives and ensure comprehensive visibility into our distributed systems operating across various clouds and data centers.
  • Build the Foundation: Collaborate with engineering teams to define and implement standards for instrumentation, logging, and tracing. You will be instrumental in establishing our first Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and error budgets.
  • Consultation & Education: Provide expert guidance and training to internal teams on Dynatrace best practices, empowering them to effectively utilise observability data for application performance understanding.
  • Run Observability enablement sessions to demo new Dynatrace features and pair on DQL to raise the organisation’s observability literacy.

Observability Instrumentation and Onboarding

  • Automate to Innovate: Design and implement automated problem remediation workflows using Dynatrace's capabilities to handle repetitive incidents, reduce manual toil, and improve system resilience.
  • Master the Data with DQL: Become the go-to expert for Dynatrace Query Language (DQL). You will build and maintain advanced dashboards, notebooks, and custom alerts that provide clear, actionable insights tailored to various stakeholders.
  • Observability Agent Instrumentation: Automate the deployment and configuration of observability agents across all supported platforms and infrastructure across cloud, on-premises, and hybrid environments, collaborating with product owners, DevOps, infrastructure, and cybersecurity teams, and provide comprehensive documentation for future self-sufficient deployments.
  • Embedding observability in the software development life cycle and ITSM processes including change management, release management and service transition.

Incident Management and Problem Management

  • Proactive Anomaly Detection: Proactively identify and drive resolution of anomalies or performance degradation of key user journeys through relevant reporting, alerting and telemetry data.
  • Incident Response Expertise: Act as a subject matter expert during production incidents, leveraging observability data to expedite root cause analysis and minimise Mean Time to Resolution (MTTR).

Observability Maintenance & Continuous Improvement

  • Configure & Optimise: Continuously refine and tune the Dynatrace environment, such as Detection Rules, Davis Anomaly Detection, Integrations, OpenPipeline and Workflows to ensure we are capturing the right data (Metrics, Events, Logs and Traces) and minimising noise.
  • Observability Practice: Help facilitate the functions and initiatives of the Observability Centre of Excellence, including Technical Knowledge Articles, Documentation and the Observability Framework.
  • Observability Support Channels: Assist stakeholders with their support requests via chat channels or ServiceNOW tickets.
  • Maturing Observability Practice: Proactively identifies areas for improvement, focusing on streamlining processes and enhancing service quality.

What do we need from you

Now let’s talk about you:

  • Significant experience (at least 3 years) in software engineering, system design, or DevOps, with a focus on observability and monitoring in production environments.
  • Deep understanding of metrics, logs, and distributed traces, and how they interrelate.
  • Dynatrace Associate or Professional certification, with proven hands-on experience in administering and using the Dynatrace platform.
  • In-depth knowledge of Dynatrace Query Language (DQL).
  • Strong knowledge of cloud environments (Azure or GCP) and containerized architectures (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to perform deep-dive analysis in complex, distributed systems.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, capable of translating technical terms for diverse business stakeholders.
  • A natural curiosity and structured approach to troubleshooting, turning data points into clear narratives.
  • Solid understanding of ITIL 4 principles.
  • Skilled in creating reports and dashboards for data-driven decision-making.
  • Familiarity with JavaScript, Glide API, and ServiceNow automation workflows is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Dynatrace Monaco, Ansible) and experience with CI/CD concepts (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions) are highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience in implementing OpenTelemetry and familiarity with defining and tracking SLOs/SLIs and error budgets are also a plus.

If you're ready to make a significant impact and grow your career in a dynamic and supportive environment, we encourage you to apply! We are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace where all voices are heard and valued.

The benefits are good too!

  • We offer flexible working in every sense
  • An exclusive discount card for BWS, Dan Murphy’s, Woolworths, BIG W and other Endeavour Group brands, including our ALH pubs
  • Monthly meeting-free days
